An Introduction To Cervicogenic Headache
The average weight of a human head is somewhere around 14 pounds. The muscles in the neck have a pretty tough job of supporting and moving it around the entire day. But what happens if one of the neck muscles or ligaments get strained or torn? The rest of the muscles have to work harder to compensate for the temporarily incapacitated muscle, therefore creating an imbalance.
The imbalance is believed to be the cause of a cervicogenic headache. This particular variation happens to be one of the most common types of headaches a person can catch. One of the main causes of this can be linked to keeping your neck in the wrong position for a long period of time.
To be more specific, the correct position differs slightly from person to person. It’s dependent on what you’re accustomed to; the way you sleep, read and stand are just some factors that can determine this for you. Straying away from the position where the muscles in your neck are relaxed causes tension on certain areas, eventually leading to the rise of a cervicogenic headache.
Having said that, it’s no wonder there’s millions of people acquiring this type of headache. Individuals at work are very prone to developing the disorder. Being made to sit down in front of a desk with nothing to do but look down on your paperwork for 8 hours puts great strain on your neck. Answering the phone requires you to tilt your head sideways to the earpiece, creating more pressure, which can also lead to the development of a cervicogenic headache.
Students are another group that suffers from this disorder frequently. Cocking your head forward to do hours of research and writing for the completion of assignments and projects is good for your grades, but bad for your well-being coz it keeps you away from your ideal head position. Also, answering a series of quizzes and exams for long periods of time is yet another factor that makes this group prone to the illness.
Gamers and anybody that sits in front of computers or gaming consoles for most of the day have good chances of getting a cervicogenic headache as well. Aside from this condition being caused by poor posture, it’s also possible to have it triggered by direct injuries.
Being in a car accident is one way of getting your neck muscles torn, as well as participating in contact sports. This is why lots of athletes that compete in such types of games sometimes complain of headaches after the competition.
