Coping with Migraine Nausea
There are certain illnesses that cause headaches accompanied by nausea. The flu and meningitis are just two of these illnesses. In both cases, it is likely that the nausea is caused by the illnesses' effects on the stomach and not by the headache itself. However, doctors have long known that some types of headaches can really make you nauseous. Among the many types of headache, the migraine is most known for making patients nauseous. The symptom is commonly known as migraine nausea.
It is estimated that around eight out of every ten migraine sufferers experience migraine nausea. The nausea can occur for all types of migraines. A good number of adults also experience migraine nausea, but it is very often seen in children who suffer from migraines, especially those who get benign paroxysmal vertigo (a type of migraine) or abdominal migraines. The nausea can come before or during the pain of the headache, and it can often lead to vomiting.
At present, scientists aren't entirely sure why the attack phase of a migraine can cause nausea. One theory suggests that it is connected to the fact that levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin tend to drop during a migraine. Low levels of serotonin have also been linked to motion sickness or nausea. The common factor of decreased serotonin could be what causes both the migraine and nausea to occur at the same time. This theory is further supported by the fact that movement-related nausea is experienced by roughly 50% of people who suffer from migraines.
Those who suffer from migraine with nausea that leads to vomiting often risk dehydration. The expulsion of body fluids often makes the headache worse, which worsens the nausea, which can lead to further vomiting. To avoid this cyclic problem, doctors suggest that those who have experience migraines with nausea and vomiting try to stay hydrated at all times, drinking a lot of water throughout the day. Having a small snack available at all times is also important so that the sufferer can quickly eat something when they feel the migraine coming on. This will help keep their body filled with nutrients.
Apart from these preventive methods, overall lifestyle changes and medication can also help those who experience migraines with nausea. Migraleve Pink, a form of medication that is a combination of anti-migraine and anti-nausea meds can work well for those who suffer from this problem. On the more holistic or natural approach, drinking ginger tea daily, which is known to help with nausea, is a good practice.
Migraine nausea is one of the worst symptoms that can come with a migraine. If not addressed, it can really take a toll on the body. Seeing a doctor to help address the problem is in theĀ best interest of all patients who suffer from this problem.
