Five Migraine Headache Triggers You Should Avoid
You may not be taking migraine headaches that seriously. The disorder can be a lot worse than you think. Its debilitating effects, especially the potentially excruciating pain it causes in your head, can keep you from work and other daily activities for a couple of hours, a few days, and sometimes even more than a week.
The best way to prevent this from happening to you is to identify the different probable migraine headache triggers and avoid them. With that said, here’s the first thing to stay away from as much as possible: Chinese food. As much as you and I may love this kind of chow, it usually has MSG mixed in to add more flavors. However, the crystalline salt can be found in other foods as well, such as canned goods, soups and seasonings.
2nd on our list of migraine headache triggers are dried fruits. The problem isn’t in the fruits themselves, but with the sulfite that is used to keep them from expiring. 3rd, we have anything that contains artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and saccharin. That includes those soft drinks and diet chocolates that claim to have no sugar content, coz it’s always sweetened artificially.
4th on the list is sensory disturbances. Given the fact that migraines can affect the central nervous system, it’s safe to say these are very common triggers, especially for those who have history with migraines. Bright flashing light is one factor that sets off the disorder; an example of this would be flickering light from your television screen.
Moreover, travelling in a car, boat or plane can ignite motion sickness and possibly even a migraine as well. Furthermore, sudden loud noises are common migraine headache triggers. It’s been shown that prolonged loud noises are even more effective at activating the throbbing in your head you get from migraines. Also, certain smells are another culprit as well – it doesn’t even have to be that strong too, since it’s the specific scents that do the “harm”, such that of paint and perfume.
5th and last on our list of migraine headache triggers is weather change – there are some people that react differently to changes in air pressure or humidity. Extremes of hot and cold weather are a common trigger as proclaimed by many sufferers of the disorder.
With all that said, keep in mind that these are just some of many underlying factors that set off the migraine headaches. The ones listed here may or may not have any effects on you, so it’d be good if you could familiarize yourself with the other causes.
