Headaches and Pregnancy: How to Treat Them without Prescription Drugs

If you are pregnant and suffering from migraine then you know that you cannot just take any over-the-counter drug or even herbal remedies to relieve you of the pain.   During pregnancy, you will need special tools to combat migraine.

Headaches and migraines affect a good number of pregnant women. Pregnancy headaches are mainly due to the enormous changes in the hormones that your body produces. The increase in estrogen levels alone may trigger headaches and migraines. These migraine attacks will usually occur during the first trimester and gradually decreases or totally stops during the second and third trimester of your pregnancy.

To help prevent and alleviate the pain of a migraine attack, here are some techniques you can try:

  • Apply a warm compress or warm towel on your face, covering your eyes and temples.
  • If your migraine is due to tension or stress, apply a cold compress on the back of your neck instead. Ice packs will also work well on your forehead and under your neck if you are able to lie down.
  • Make sure you get enough sleep. At least 8 hours of sleep a day is recommended. Maintain a regular sleeping schedule and make sure that your bed and pillows are comfortable and do not create pressure on your neck and body.
  • During an attack, sleeping in a dark, quiet room may help.
  • Drink lots of water to avoid dehydration, which can also trigger your migraine.
  • Regularly spaced meals and a well balanced diet will also provide relief from your headaches. Missing meals will make you feel hungry and trigger your headaches.
  • Avoid processed foods and eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. This will not only prevent your migraines but will also keep you and your baby healthy.
  • Even if you are pregnant, low impact exercises will help in keeping your headaches away and in promoting your general health.
  • A massage that will ease the tension from your muscles will also relieve you of a lot of problems. Your masseuse should be informed of your condition so that she would know how to handle your massage session.
  • Stop drinking coffee, tea and sodas because the caffeine in these drinks can induce insomnia and your migraine headaches. If you were a coffee drinker before you got pregnant, caffeine withdrawal may also cause your headaches.

Being pregnant should be a happy time for you and your family. Awaiting the arrival of your baby should not be marred by migraines and headaches. If the above suggested prevention and cures are not enough, discuss your condition with your obstetrician for other possible safe solutions you can try.
