Hormone-Related Migraines

Migraines during pregnancy are quite common and easily treatable by simple home remedies for migraines or any non-aspirin pain relief medication. It is also normal for some women to experience their first migraines when they are pregnant. There are studies that strongly correlate migraines and hormones and hormones are usually at its peak during pregnancy.

Thus, it is obvious that migraines are closely linked to hormonal imbalance in both men and women. And since women are more likely to get migraines than men, then it may have something to do with the menstrual period. Menstruation-related headache is also very common and normally disappears after menstruation. Findings of researches on the frequency and severity of menstruation-related headaches point to a deeply unbalanced hormone regulation system.

The incidence of migraine headaches increases among females after puberty. Moreover, estrogen withdrawal has also been touted as a trigger for migraine headache, which explains why some women suffer from migraines when their estrogen levels are low. However, the standard estrogen replacement therapy with artificial estrogens is not always effective at relieving migraines. It works for some women, but in others, estrogen therapy appears to worsen migraines. A recent study which involves 17,107 postmenopausal women shows that migraine is more widespread among women who are on conventional hormone replacement therapy. Another study indicates that it is difficult to pinpoint which postmenopausal women will suffer from much severe migraines because of conventional hormone replacement therapy.

There is no explanation yet, but it looks as if progesterone levels play an important role. During the normal monthly cycle of a healthy premenopausal woman, her estrogen levels will rise during the first part of the cycle. After the egg is released, her progesterone levels increase rapidly to prepare her uterus for possible implantation. Consequently, her levels of estrogen will decline. If implantation fails to take place, her levels of progesterone and estrogen will both decline fast, then menstruation takes place and prepares the uterus for another cycle. By closely studying and monitoring women with menstrual migraine during this cycle, researchers have made some interesting discoveries. They found out that migraine headaches are more severe and debilitating during the stage of the menstrual cycle when the estrogen level is most dominant; women with relatively higher progesterone levels have milder headache symptoms. This research indicates that it is not the levels of estrogen that are linked with migraines but the imbalance between estrogen and progesterone levels.
