How to Prevent Migraines

Finding ways to prevent the onset of migraines or headaches is as important as looking for either a migraine headache relief or a migraine headache treatment. Some situations and even certain foods are known to set off migraines. If you can identify them, then you can eventually avoid them to prevent future migraines.

You can even prepare a headache diary so that you can diligently list all your headache triggers. Each time a certain food or a particular situation leads to the onset of headaches, take note of it so that you can tailor your lifestyle to avoiding it.

Here are some tips to prevent future headaches:

  1. Avoid smoking. Not only is smoking very unhealthy, if you are prone to chronic headaches, then smoking will further exacerbate them.

  2. Avoid the intake of alcohol. Some people get headaches after a few sips of wine.

  3. Get plenty of exercise regularly.

  4. Sleep at least eight hours every night.

  5. Learn relaxation techniques and identify your stress triggers so that you can avoid them. If you are prone to chronic tension headaches, then minimize or learn ways to handle stress so that it will not lead to debilitating migraines.

  6. Stay away from the following common food triggers:

  • Aged cheeses contain large amounts of tyramine. The older the cheese, the greater the tyramine amount. This protein byproduct is a typical headache trigger for people who have sensitivity to it. The following aged cheeses are usually the culprit: blue cheeses, brie, cheddar, stilton, feta, gorgonzola, mozzarella, muenster, parmesan, swiss, and processed cheeses.

  • Other tyramine-rich foods are processed meats, canned soups, onions, olives, certain types of beans, pickles, raisins, nuts, avocados, and red wine. Take note that anything classified as a processed food (canned food, dried goods, etc.) is a potential food trigger to headaches and migraines.

  • Artificial sweeteners like aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet, etc.) are known to trigger migraine headache symptoms.

  • Food additives like monosodium glutamate or MSG , meat tenderizers, and yeast extracts are one of the most common causes of food-related headaches.  MSG-induced headache even has its own name; it is called Chinese restaurant syndrome, and it occurs within an hour of ingestion of the MSG.

Knowing exactly what situation or food initiates your headaches and migraines can make you avoid them. Banish your chronic headaches simply by avoiding what causes them and lead a more comfortable life.
