Migraine Cause is a Genetic Defect
The common belief about constant headache causes is that they are predominantly brought about by environmental and outside factors – food, weather, physical exhaustion, hormones, etc. But chronic migraine, that severe and long-lasting headache normally felt as a throbbing pain at the front or on a side of the head, has been shown again and again to be an inherited trait. Chronic migraines run in families. Thus, for many years, researchers have been looking for that elusive genetic factor that breeds persistent migraine headaches.
Scientists have pinpointed a genetic defect associated with migraine which can give a dramatic push for the development of new migraine headache treatment or remedies. A flawed gene which is found in a family of migraine sufferers triggers the severe headaches, and this particular gene has been pinpointed and named as the TRESK. An abstract of the journal article is found here.
The results of this study were reported in the journal Nature Medicine. Dr. Zameel Cader of the University of Oxford emphasized that the discovery was an important step in understanding why one out of five people suffers from migraines. The World Health Organization (WHO) even rated migraines as the leading cause of disability.
Until now, aside from the fact that many scientists were sure that it existed, nothing was known about the gene which was directly responsible for migraine. The gene called TRESK has been termed as an activate gene, because if it fails to work properly, then environmental factors can readily trigger pain signals in the brain and cause recurring severe and throbbing headaches. To identify TRESK, the international team of researchers used multiple DNA samples from different families with verifiable chronic migraine sufferers among their members.
The discovery of this defective gene opens a world of possibilities for migraine treatment. It is even possible that the gene can be turned off completely to eradicate this inherited trait among the succeeding generations of migraine sufferers. The implication of something inherent, a type of bodily defect that makes some people susceptible to certain environmental factors which normally don’t cause headaches in non-migraine sufferers, is a big step towards a complete picture of the common chronic migraine. A defect in this gene can also make a person susceptible to many types of migraines, even migraine with aura.
In short, this defect in the gene is something that nobody can control. The defect does not directly cause the migraine; it just makes the person much more susceptible to all the environmental and physical factors that trigger migraines.
