Migraine Headaches: Should You Follow a Migraine Diet?

Migraine attacks may sometimes be triggered by what you eat. Thus in the treatment of migraine, medical practitioners often recommend a healthy diet with lots of exercise alongside the drugs they may prescribe to you. This is because a healthy lifestyle will strengthen your body and help it cope better with migraine attacks.

Just as there is no foolproof permanent remedy for migraines, there is also no real standard migraine diet that you can follow. This is because food triggers to migraine headaches are different for each one. To define your own migraine diet, here are some guidelines you can follow:

  • Follow the food pyramid which serves as a guide on what our bodies need to function optimally. This means, a diet that consists of fresh vegetables, low-fat milk products, fresh fruits, lean meat and grains.
  • Be aware of known migraine food triggers such as chocolate, yogurt, salt, sugar, fatty foods, nuts and beans. Eggs, cakes and colas can also trigger migraine.
  • Stay away from alcoholic drinks including red wine and beer.
  • Avoid processed foods which contain MSG (monosodium glutamate), phenylethylamine (chocolate, onion, garlic), tyramine (yogurt, beans, nuts, cheeses) and nitrates (bacon, hotdogs and other preserved meat products).
  • Note your reaction to these known migraine food triggers and keep a record to find out which foods are migraine triggers for you. Be aware that there are times when food taken alone will not trigger your migraine, but when this is combined with other foods, that’s when they cause those painful headaches.
  • Eat more of foods that help prevent migraine like iron rich foods and foods containing vitamin B12 and magnesium.
  • Do not overeat. Obesity or being overweight makes the body prone to hormonal changes which may trigger migraines.
  • In perfecting your diet, do not rush it. It really takes time and patience to identify your food triggers.
