Specific Types of Migraine Headache
Those new to the world of migraines often believe that a migraine is just a really bad headache. While this is true, for the most part, there is much more to a migraine than just pain. Migraines are vascular headaches that are characterized by a dull ache than develops into a throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head. The pain is usually attributed to the changes in size of the arteries inside and around the skull. More than this basic description, however, migraines have characteristics and these characteristics are what define the types of migraine headache.
The types of migraine headache are important to know because the kind of migraine you have can determine the type of medication you should take. There are several types of migraine headache and some people can have more than one type.
Migraine with Aura. Characterized by visual phenomena about five to thirty minutes before the onset of the attack, people have reported having tunnel vision, seeing dots, or seeing flashes of light.
Migraine without Aura. This is a migraine that comes without warning. The pain simply starts. It is often thought that this is caused by an inflammation of the blood vessels.
Abdominal Migraine. Most people associate migraines with the head, but the truth is the pain can also attack the abdomen. Like the headache, the pain lasts several hours and is accompanied by diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting.
Basilar Artery Migraine. Strongly related to a hormonal migraine, it is characterized by a lack of balance, confusion, dizziness, and visual disturbances. The pain is often in the back of the head, near the brain stem. If you suffer from this type of migraine, you should not take triptans.
Hemiplegic Migraine. Like a basilar artery migraine, this type of migraine headache should not be addressed with triptans. It is characterized by temporary motor paralysis or sensory disturbances prior to the headache.
Ophthalmoplegic Migraine. A migraine that is focused on the eyeball. It can last from a few hours to a few days. In some cases it lasts several months, which leads to paralysis in the muscles of the eye.
Retinal Migraine. Like ophthalmoplegic migraines, this type of migraine affects the eye, resulting in temporary loss of vision in the affected eye.
Silent Migraine. A silent migraine often affects vision, but there is no headache present.
Status Migraine. A migraine that lasts for over three days.
Transformed Migraines. Migraines that result from an overuse of medication. Characterized by frequent attacks.
Knowing the types of migraine headache you are dealing with can help you better prepare for or prevent certain symptoms. Though some symptoms can be really scary, knowing that they are related to your migraines can help you deal with the problem better. Have a doctor diagnose which type you have. Don't guess or self-medicate, you may end up making the problem much worse.
