The Four Stages of Migraine Headache Symptoms
More often than not, those who suffer from migraines don't care to know about the migraine headache symptoms during the time of their attack. All they know is that they are in pain. All they are focused on is getting rid of the pain or having the attack over with. This is because migraines can be so debilitating that a person can do little else but close their eyes and pray for the pain to go away.
What migraine sufferers don't realize at the time of their attacks, though, is that they can actually prepare for the attack or help lessen the severity of the attack by looking out for migraine headache symptoms, which can warn them that an attack is on its way. About 40% to 60% of migraine sufferers have experience warning symptoms, which come in four stages.
The four stages of a migraine are the prodome, aura, attack, and postdrome. Each of the stages are characterized by their own symptoms, and they can signal that a migraine is coming or is about to end. Some people do not experience all stages, but the attack is definitely experienced by all because this is what makes it a migraine.
Prodrome. This stage can happen a couple of days before the attack itself. It is characterized by irritability, food cravings, diarrhea or constipation, depression, neck stiffness, food cravings, and hyperactivity. Note that not all of these symptoms may occur.
Aura. This stage can happen shortly before the migraine attack. It is characterized by visual phenomena, such as vision loss or flashes of light. This is the most common symptom of aura. However, some people have also experienced having speech or language problems and the feeling of pins and needles in the extremities.
Attack. This is characterized by the actual migraine headache symptoms, or the symptoms most commonly associated with migraines. During an attack, a person experiences a pulsating or throbbing pain on one side of the head and/or behind one of the eyes. They can be nauseous to the point of vomiting or lightheaded to the point of fainting. They sometimes have blurred vision, but are often sensitive to light, smell, and sound. Attacks last anywhere from four to seventy-two hours.
Postdrome. This stage signals the end of the attack. The person feels drained or fatigued. Though in some cases, they feel slightly euphoric, possibly because the attack is over.
Migraine headache symptoms often begin in childhood or early adulthood. The headaches are usually unilateral, meaning focused on one side of the head. They can switch sides with each attack. Headaches that occur on one side only should be further checked by a doctor to make sure there isn't a different cause for the headache. You should also see a doctor if you have an abrupt, severe headache; a headache with a fever; a headache with a seizure; a headache after coughing; a headache with a rash; a headache with a stiff neck; a headache with confusion; and a headache with double vision.
