Treatment Options For Serious Forms Of Cervicogenic Headaches
There are lots of causes behind cervicogenic headaches that need to be taken into careful consideration before pushing through with a specific treatment option. The better the doctor is at determining the underlying factors that triggered the disorder, the more effective the treatment will be.
For the less severe forms of this ailment, basic methods can be applied that’ll solve it right away, such as observing proper neck posture when sleeping, reading, sitting, standing or any other activity that places tension on your neck. Moreover, stretching everyday should be more than enough to remedy the problem for you.
However, cervicogenic headaches that are caused by a car accident or sports injury may need professional attention. Having your head jerk forward and then back suddenly places a lot of tension in your cervical ligaments and tendons, which is why car accidents can cause an acute cervicogenic headache to develop.
Blunt force trauma from participating in physical contact sports (or street brawls) has the same effect stated above. There are of course plenty of other causes behind acute cervicogenic headaches, but what are different treatment options for such problems?
Given that you’ve sustained cervical damage that lead to the development of this specific type of headache, you’ll probably need a muscle relaxant, manipulation and physical therapy – during an accident, your neck muscles contract involuntarily to protect the body from further damage. This is where the relaxant comes into play, which basically stimulates the contracted tendons to relax, allowing manipulation and physical therapy to work their magic.
The next step is to treat any strained cervical muscles and misaligned bones in the neck through manipulation, which in turn takes the pressure of the nerves (another possible cause of this type of headache). Once that’s done with, physical therapy comes into the picture. What it does is keep the muscles from going back to the position it was in when the accident or blunt force trauma occurred.
Doing so will prevent the muscles from going back to the incorrect position, which can potentially cause misalignment in the neck bones yet again. Massage by therapists specializing in this field will be needed to make sure this doesn’t happen.
Lastly, sometimes cervicogenic headaches can get so bad that the doctor might have to prescribe you painkillers. But taking such drugs should be avoided as much as possible, since there’s always that possibility of you getting addicted to it.
