Understanding a Migraine Sinus Headache

There are many different types of headaches. They are classified according to their characteristics, such as severity of pain. Each type of headache can have a different underlying cause, which is often directly connected to the characteristics of the headache. A migraine is one type of headache that has several sub-types, meaning they can be further classified into different characteristics. Among these sub-types is a migraine sinus headache.

Before discussing a migraine sinus headache, it is first important to discuss a sinus headache. Also known as rhinosinusitis, a sinus headache occurs when a person has nasal and sinus congestion which leads to facial pain or pressure. This pressure leads to a headache. Apart from the pain and congestion, sinus headaches often come with fever, feeling ill, and a nasal discharge that is either yellow or green. Often, doctors will prescribe antibiotics to treat sinus headaches, which take several days to go away.

Studies have shown that many people who suffer from migraines often mistake their problem as a sinus headache. In fact, a majority of self-diagnosed sinus headaches are actually migraines. Why does this happen? Simply because they are suffering from what is now commonly known as migraine sinus headaches, which is a migraine with sinus symptoms.

Traditionally, migraines are unilateral or one-sided headaches, and nasal congestion or a runny nose is not associated with this pain. Recent research has shown, however, that a good number of migraine sufferers actually experience sinus-like symptoms during their attack phase, namely a runny nose and pain that affects both sides of the head, hence the confusion with a sinus headache.

Unlike a sinus headache, though, a migraine sinus headache has some distinguishing characteristics. First, the pain is a throbbing pain instead of a feeling of pressure against the head. Second, the nasal discharge is clear or watery. Third, the other symptoms of migraine are there, such as nausea, visual phenomena, dizziness, etc. Patients may even go through the four stages of migraine, though very often, migraine sinus headaches are also migraines without aura, which is why patients didn't make the connection in the first place. Fourth and finally, a migraine sinus headache cannot be addressed with sinus drugs. The antibiotics won't work because it is not a sinus headache.

To properly determine whether or not you are really suffering from a sinus headache or a migraine with sinus symptoms, keep track of the characteristics of your headaches and hand your notes over to your doctor during consultaion. S/he should be able to make the right diagnosis and give you the best course of action in terms of medication.
