What Is An Ice Pick Headache?
Have you ever had a headache so bad that it literally felt like some guy off the streets grabbed an ice pick and started thrusting it into your head? Or at least seen someone put his hands on his head as if it were going to explode? Well if you have gone through or witnessed anything like this, the chances are you or that person has suffered from an ice pick headache.
As its name indicates, this type of headache is extremely painful; those who’ve experienced this describe it as sharp jabbing sensations that can occur anywhere in the head, and sometimes around the eye. The frequency of this recurring within the day is quite rare, but in some extreme cases, there are individuals that can actually have up to 50 attacks in just a day. On the other hand, there are other instances where some individuals will only experience an ice pick headache once in their entire lifetime.
If there’s anything good about this, it’d be the duration of an attack. Most people that have suffered from it say it was quite short-lived, lasting for less than a second only. Unfortunately, there are those that say there were times where they had to dish out the excruciating pain for up to 30 seconds.
The ice pick headache is shrouded in darkness – research has been conducted on this disorder, but they haven’t gathered anything solid on it yet, for the time being. What triggers the tremendously sharp pain is also unknown, but statistics show that approximately 60% of the victims of this condition have history with other types of migraines. Moreover, experts have found a link between the stabbing sensation and cluster migraines, but more research still needs to be conducted to validate that idea.
Furthermore, some scientists say diseased brain vessels and cranial trauma may be another underlying factor, but they still don’t have any proof yet. Other than these “theories”, they’ve got nothing else that’d serve as solid evidence.
Luckily, an ice pick headache is extremely rare, with only 2% of the entire population suffering from it. Also, statistics show that the majority of people that do suffer from its dreadful symptoms are about 47 years old. That’s great news indeed for youngsters, but bad news for the older people.
If you believe that you’re suffering from this particular type of headache, and it’s really bothering you, then you should see a doctor and ask him for the ways to prevent it from recurring.
