What On Earth Is A Thunderclap Headache?
There’s a whole bunch of different types of headaches out there, but one that you probably haven’t heard of yet is known as the thunderclap headache. The title it has been given says a lot about it – just like the thunder, an unsuspecting victim can suffer from an attack without any warning. As for the pain, it’s really excruciating, and may vary in duration from person to person.
Some attacks can last for a couple of minutes, wherein it reaches its maximum intensity as early as 60 seconds. Consider yourself lucky if this is the case for you, coz other people have it real bad, with their agony lasting anywhere from a day to even more than a week.
A thunderclap headache may be a sign of nothing serious, but there are times where it can be an indication that you need to get a checkup right away. One cause of this excruciating headache is a blood vessel about to burst in your brain; you don’t have to be a genius to say having something like this happen to you can be fatal. As a matter of fact, almost half of those who suffered from a blood vessel exploding in their brain experienced the wretched headache first.
The symptoms of a thunderclap headache can also be a sign of meningitis, which is a deadly infection that causes the membranes around your brain or spinal cord to swell. Another underlying factor for the unbearable headache is a blockage that slows the flow of spinal fluid to the brain. With that said, there are a number of things that could have caused the jam, such as a cyst (you should be worried if this is the cause indeed).
So judging by all the life-threating risks involved, it goes without saying that you should seek the wisdom of a doctor as soon as you experience the symptoms mentioned in this article. Several tests can be used to confirm any suspicions you have, such as a CT scan, MRI scan or spinal tap.
Hearing the term “thunderclap headache” may sound funny, but this is no joke. It’s possible that there’s nothing for you to be worrying about; but there’s also the likeliness of it being something severe. If a serious problem is indeed the main cause behind the painful headaches, the doctors and brain surgeons may be able to do something about it before things get out of hand.
