What You Need To Know About An Exercise Induced Headache
Working out is an important part of our lives, as it keeps us in great shape and helps ward off some serious diseases. But have you ever done it so hard that you got a pretty bad headache during or after one of your routines? If you did, then what you experienced is probably something that’s known as an exercise induced headache.
This is common amongst people that are into pumping iron, running, jogging, rowing and many other forms of exercise and competitive sports. When this happens, it’s USUALLY nothing to worry about. But sometimes, there are instances where you should take it more seriously, as it can be a symptom of something life-threatening.
An exercise induced headache comes in two types, with the first one being: primary exercise headaches. This is the kind of aching where you’ve got nothing to worry about. It does not indicate that you’re going to be debilitated for the rest of your life or drop to the floor dead. The main cause of this is believed to be linked to the dilation of the blood vessels in your head, which occurs during strenuous exercise.
You can tell you’re having this non-lethal headache when you start experiencing the following symptoms: throbbing sensation in both sides of the head occurring during rigorous exercise routines. They don’t last that long either, with most people complaining for less than 5 minutes or 48 hours at the most.
There is of course medication that can be taken to prevent this from happening to you, such as sumatriptan, but its best you consult a doctor beforehand just to be sure it’ll work well for you.
The next type of exercise induced headache is known as the secondary exercise headache. This disorder is frequently caused by several problems, such as the development of potentially cancerous tumors, an abnormality of one or more blood vessels connected to the brain, a sinus infection and many more.
To determine if you have a secondary exercise headache, you need to look out for the following symptoms: first, your neck becomes unusually stiff. Vomiting is another sign, as well as suffering from a case of double vision. Moreover, this becomes really serious when you start passing out.
If you suspect you’re displaying the symptoms of the “lethal” form of exercise induced headache, do yourself a favor and go consult a doctor right away. The earlier he can determine the underlying causes, the better the chances you get at a successful recovery.
