How to Deal with What Causes Headache
A headache is a common condition that almost everyone has gone through and it is not a pleasant experience at all. Luckily for most people, headaches are not serious as they are only the body’s temporary reaction to chemical changes that result from tension or other physical stimuli. For others, such as those with migraine or those with an underlying disease, headaches need more medical attention. Thus, to be able to avoid or manage the pain more effectively, it is essential to know what causes headache.
According to statistics, headaches occur in forty-five million people every year, most of them women. The intensity and nature of the pain varies from person to person and depends on the type of headache that is experienced. The most common are tension headache and migraine headache.
A tension headache is very common, as about ninety percent of adults have had it in one time or another. The pain felt is dull and feels like a vise is gripping both sides of the head. What causes headache is tension in the neck and shoulder muscles but recent studies suggest that stress, anxiety and fatigue are also major contributory factors.
One of the most painful, if not the most painful, form of headaches is the migraine headache. The sufferer feels a throbbing, intense pain on one side of the head. Oftentimes, the headache comes along with other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sounds and visual disturbance.
The pain may last as long as 72 hours and usually the person may need to rest until the migraine attack is over. Moving the head makes the pain worse. Migraines are debilitating and can significantly interfere with normal daily activities.
The events that lead to the manifestation of symptoms and what causes headache are varied. Experts believe that migraine is genetic so those who have family members suffering from them are predisposed to it. Attacks are caused by chemical changes in the brain that cause arteries to expand. The dilated blood vessels push against the nerves covering the head, and pain results.
Why the chemical changes occur is not completely known. However, the external stimuli that start the chain reaction leading to an attack are called triggers. Triggers range from food, events and environment and these include chocolate, caffeine, cheeses, MSG, bright lights, loud noises, changes in weather, anxiety, worry, physical exertion and stress.
Tension headaches, since they are not very severe, can be treated with over-the-counter pain killers such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen. However, one must be careful not to consume too much of these drugs since too much medication can bring about rebound headaches.
If tension headaches occur frequently, it is best to seek medical help since this indicates that there is some underlying cause for them, which could be serious.
For migraines, the best treatment is preventing an attack from occurring. This involves knowing the triggers and what causes headache, and then avoiding them. Otherwise, when attacks do really occur, then medications have to be taken.
Mild migraine can be treated with drugs that focus on constricting blood vessels in the brain. More severe cases have to be treated with triptans, medicines that act on the brain chemicals. Resting in a dark, quiet room also helps to relieve symptoms.
Headaches are medical conditions that can certainly be treated and avoided. All it takes is a little vigilance and the exercise of some practices to keep it under control.
