A Guide to Understanding Migraines: Symptoms, Treaments, Natural Remedies for Various Types of Migraines
What is migraine?
Migraine is a disease affecting the nervous system that is oftentimes accompanied by a severe headache. Migraine headaches are described as an intense, throbbing pain that occurs on one side or both sides of the head. The frequency and duration of attacks vary among sufferers. Some might experience an attack once or twice a year while others can have weekly episodes, with the pain lasting for several minutes or several days. Despite the pain, migraine is not generally fatal but attacks can interfere with daily activities.
Who can have migraine?
Anyone can be stricken with the disease but some are more predisposed to it than others. There are more women “migraineurs” (people who have migraine) than men and it usually affects people who are aged between 15 and 55. Some researchers believe that migraine is genetic and those with a family histories of migraine will be most likely to suffer from it as well.
What causes migraine?
Although there is no general consensus to the exact cause, experts believe that migraine takes place when serotonin, chemical found in the body, is released into the bloodstream. The presence of this chemical causes the inflammation of blood vessels in the brain. The swollen arteries press against the nerves in the head, causing pain.
