A Guide to Understanding Migraines: Symptoms, Treaments, Natural Remedies for Various Types of Migraines
Migraine attacks are a result of specific substances and factors that are called triggers. Reactions to triggers vary from one sufferer to the next. Known triggers are:
- emotional stress (depression, worry, excitement, anger, stressful situations
- physical stress (fatigue, sleeplessness, routine change, neck tension)
- food containing MSG, tyramine, caffeine and alcohol
- chocolate, cheese and citrus fruits
- skipping meals
- very bright lights
- flashing and flickering lights
- very loud noises
- strong and pungent odors
- change in weather
- smoking
- hormonal changes during menstruation, puberty and menopause
Common Symptoms:
A headache is not the only symptom of a migraine attack. Several others may appear during an attack. In addition to the headache, a migraineur would likely feel one or more of these:
- visual disturbances (blind spots, distorted vision, flashing lights) called aura
- nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
- sensitivity to light, sound and smell
- tingling or stiffness in the limbs
- confusion and difficulty in concentration
- stiffness in the neck and shoulders
Some symptoms arise days before the attack itself, when the migraine is in its prodrome stage. These warning signs include:
- craving for sweet foods
- excitability
- hyperactivity
- tiredness
- frequent yawning
- mood change
