Finding the Right Treatment for Menopause Migraines

Menopause migraines are migraines that affect only women and are related to menopause and hormonal levels. If a woman is not a sufferer, perimenopause might bring about the first attack. For someone who already is a sufferer, this stage in her life could increase the frequency and intensity of the disease. Since hormone levels affect their occurrence, menopause migraines can also be felt by young women when estrogen levels change in the course of the menstrual cycle.

Triggers that initiate an attack are different from other forms of migraine. As mentioned, the primary cause is the fall in estrogen levels. Other causes are hunger, emotional stress and menstrual periods. During menopause migraines, headaches usually go together with nausea and vomiting, visual distortion, light and sound sensitivity, dizziness, confusion and sometimes even paralysis to one side of the face.

Similar to common migraines, there are two different approaches to the treatment for menopausal migraines: abortive and preventive. The abortive approach focuses on eliminating a headache that has already started and could involve taking painkillers.

There are also various techniques that can supplement oral medications in bringing about pain relief. Resting in a cool, comfortable, quiet room helps to alleviate symptoms and a hot or cold compress to the aching areas in the head helps bring relief.

Others use breathing to relax and put themselves to sleep. A recommended method is alternately inhaling and exhaling into a paper bag for thirty to sixty seconds. This cuts down the oxygen while at the same time increasing the intake of carbon dioxide, which relaxes the organs.

The preventive approach of treatment is always the most helpful since they reduce the probability of an attack.  One that is becoming increasingly popular as a treatment to menopause migraines is hormone therapy with estrogen and progesterone, to regulate the levels of these hormones in the body.

Women may differ in the amount of hormones that need to be replaced. Moreover, this method has associated risks. It can bring about lesions in the uterus and increase the likelihood of breast cancer.  Therefore, if this option of treatment is chosen, it is best to discuss these issues extensively with the physician before making a decision.

Diet also plays a vital role. Limiting or avoiding common migraine triggers such as coffee, alcohol and preservatives and eating a healthy diet is beneficial. Getting enough sleep and keeping the body active is very helpful in maintaining good health since a body which is at its peak physical condition is better able to cope with stress and resist illnesses.

A suggested aid in treatment is to record the time and dates of the menopause migraines, as well as the medications taken. The record can be brought during visits to the physician and will surely be invaluable in finding the best treatment.
