Alternative Migraine Cures

Alternative medicine is an area some migraine sufferers have looked into to seek treatment. For some, the usual medications have ceased to work and it is time to try new avenues of therapy. Others wish to avoid the side effects resulting from ingesting too many painkillers and drugs and the side-effect free features of herbal remedies provide a positive prospect for healing. Still, others aim to hit two birds with one stone, combining both conventional and alternative migraine cures.

Alternative medicine is any healing method that is not considered conventional. Several known medical practices fall within this area such as herbalism, yoga meditation, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, to name a few.

Considering the number of migraine sufferers, it is but natural to expect that not all of them will use conventional medicine for treatment. In addition, the increasing health consciousness of people has resulted in the increasing popularity of alternative medicine. It is thus not surprising that alternative migraine cures are being used extensively today.

One of the most popular of the migraine cures is yoga, a known stress reliever. Physical and emotional stress has been scientifically documented to trigger an attack and the relaxation that is achieved from doing yoga is a great help to prevent it. There are poses that can be done to prevent an attack or at its onset. However, yoga should never be done during severe attacks.

Another recommended method is relaxed breathing. A migraine attack is sometimes accompanied by an anxiety attack when the sufferer is anticipating the pain that he will be experiencing soon. The tension that he feels could contribute to the intensity of the migraine.

Breathing is helpful because it calms the sufferer and brings his heart rate to the normal level. This exercise is best done when lying down inside a warm, dark and quiet room.

Some even take it a step further and use pure lavender oil to massage the painful areas in the head. The combination of the dark room, relaxed breathing and lavender oil has been known to be an effective pain reliever.

The herbs feverfew and butterbur are categorized as migraine cures.  Feverfew has been used as traditional medicine for centuries by the Europeans to treat fever, arthritis and pain. Studies have been conducted on its effectiveness against migraine and results have not been consistent.

However, there are those who claim the feverfew decreased the frequency of attacks. Butterbur is another plant which has been proven to prevent migraine and other ailments.  Similar to conventional medicines, these herbs also exhibit side effects and care must be taken when using them for treatment.

Because of the complexity of migraine, there is no precise way of determining which medical method works best. Some have had positive results with the conventional means while others swear the alternative migraine cures have made them better. It is up to the person to choose what works best for him.article copy goes here.
