Managing Migraine Headaches
Rarely do we come across a person who wants to feel pain. Most pop a pill at the first sign of an ache anywhere in the body, to find relief. Proof of this is the booming painkiller niche of the pharmaceutical industry.
Unfortunately for migraine sufferers, taking care of pain is not merely popping a pill. The nature of migraine as a disease requires that migraine headaches must be properly managed; otherwise, the migraineur, as a person who has a migraine headache is alternatively called, will suffer for a prolonged period of time.
Except for those who have rare types of this disease, migraine headaches are the primary complaints of those seeking treatment. The pain and discomfort that comes with it, together with the other symptoms, make the patient demand, or at least desire, immediate relief.
Oftentimes this is not achievable because migraine is a chronic illness and instances of attacks are usually not short-lived. If left untreated, a migraineur becomes less productive and his quality of life surely diminishes. To lessen this negative impact, proper management of migraine headaches, as well as the other symptoms, is important.
First and foremost, there has to be an accurate assessment of the disease, as there are several types of migraine. This is crucial in order for the physician to prescribe the right therapy, which should be comprehensive enough to include not only medications but also a change in lifestyle. Certain foods and substances may have to be avoided and certain habits may have to be stopped as well.
The patient must be made aware that sometimes the painkillers that he is taking for his migraine headaches do not work as fast as he wants them to; and, taking more than what is prescribed will not make them more effective but will likely have the opposite effect. Headaches evolve over time and in accordance to this, so must the methods of treatment. The most obvious case in point is the reduced efficacy of medications over a prolonged use, which requires changes in therapy.
Treating migraine headaches need not involve medication all the time. There are several preventive techniques that one can employ to keep his migraine in check. These include keeping the body active through regular exercise, getting sufficient sleep, sticking to mealtimes and not skipping meals, and avoiding migraine triggers.
When preventive methods are not effective and migraine headaches do occur, most people find it helpful to immediately lie down in a dark, quiet room at the first sign of a symptom. Avoiding light and sound will keep the pain from getting worse. A cool compress in the painful areas of the body provides relief as well. More importantly, it is best to remain rested until the migraine is completely gone.
As any migraine sufferer can attest, the pain that comes with migraine headaches can be very debilitating. Fortunately, modern medicine and more information on the disease have made it very manageable, that even those who have it can expect to live a very normal life.
