Migraine Types and Their Remedies

Migraine types are as varied as its symptoms and in order for the proper treatment to be provided, it is essential to identify them accurately.  Although each kind has certain distinctions unique to itself, all migraine types share one basic feature: pain.

Migraine sufferers, regardless of what type the disease is, experience headaches. It generally starts with a dull ache at the temples and develops into a constant, throbbing pain that spreads to the back of the side or back of the head, even to the neck and back.

Two of the most dominant migraine types are migraine with aura and migraine without aura, sometimes referred to as classic migraine and common migraine.

Classic migraine sufferers experience warning signs before the attack, which the experts call “aura”. Aura is a collective term for visual disturbances that a person will feel hours or days before a headache. Auras can be sensed by one or two eyes and will take the form of zigzag lines, flashing lights and colors, hallucinations, blind spots and blurred vision.

Other symptoms that may come with the auras are muscle weakness on one side of the body, tingling sensation, numbness and slurred speech. Classic migraine is treated with a variety of medications that include painkillers, analgesics and triptans, drugs that target the brain chemical serotonin.

Common migraines, on the other hand, don’t start with an aura. Although they start more slowly than classic migraines, they have a longer duration and pain is usually felt on only one side of the head.

As the name suggests, this is the most prevalent of the migraine types, occurring in majority of migraine sufferers. Treatment of common migraine works best when administered at the start of an attack. Medications can be painkillers for the headache, anti-nausea if there is vomiting or triptans, if the other drugs do not give relief.

An issue to be considered when taking drugs is that there is such a thing as overuse. When medications are used too often, the body becomes resistant to them and larger doses will be needed for the drugs to do their work.  This can lead to more frequent headaches and worsening symptoms. It is therefore important that treatment of migraine be done only under a doctor’s supervision.

A less common but not less important of the migraine types is abdominal migraine. It is a kind that is usually associated with children. Unlike other forms, the pain is felt in the abdominal area and is accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Medicines that combat nausea provide relief during an attack and other preventive drugs that are used to treat other forms of migraine can be taken as well.

Another variant that is experienced by a different age group is basilar migraine, which counts young adults as sufferers. Similar to classic migraine, this rare type occurs with aura but the difference is that the aura originates from the brainstem.

Symptoms include dizziness, double vision, loss of balance, tingling and hearing changes. Auras last for an hour before the headache follows. Since basilar migraine is not common, little is known about it and physicians will most likely base their diagnosis from their patients’ previous history of migraine.

These are only a few of the existing migraine types that modern medicine has discovered and this underlines the fact that there is no uniform treatment for migraine. Knowing the right type is crucial for effective treatment.
