Migraines, Children – A Mother’s Worst Nightmare

Mothers would sacrifice everything for their children’s betterment. So when migraine headache symptoms start to rear its ugly head, and threaten to take away your child’s peace-filled lifestyle, we tend to panic.

Migraines tend to be hereditary; so if you have it, there is a 95% chance that your child will have it as well. If it runs in the family, a diagnosis at age 2 will come as no surprise. But the pain it causes the child (and us) is very hard for both parties.

Studies show that most children will experience at least one headache before age 15, and it would mostly be caused by a cold or flu. Before puberty, boys will be most likely to have migraines than the girls. After puberty though, the girls will have more headaches than the boys.

Though it is fairly easy to treat migraines and headaches in children, coming up with a diagnosis poses a bit of a problem. Children will sometimes have difficulty in describing exactly what they feel, when the headache started and they will not see any relation between a headache and a certain event or a specific food.

Having family and friends at the time of the headache will be of great help to the doctor. If the headaches/migraines are hereditary, it is best to train your child to keep a record of his symptoms this early so that he won’t have any trouble managing it as he grows older. Having a journal of the headaches can track possible triggers and will be easier for the doctor to prescribe the necessary medication.

These migraine headaches will be the same for kids and adults: throbbing pain in the forehead or around the eyes with light and/or sound sensitivity. It may sometimes be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea and/or vomiting. Since the pain is the same, most likely the triggers are the same as well. Some of the triggers are the following:

  • Bright lights and loud noises.

  • Strong, pungent or unusual odors.

  • Weather changes.

  • Missing a meal.

  • Big events that can tend to be stressful. (Yes, children can get stressed too.)

  • Changes in sleeping times.

  • Foods that may contain too much salt, caffeine or chocolate.

Non-medical treatment would have the child stay and lie down in a dark and quiet room until the headache (hopefully) passes. Put a cool cloth over the eyes and forehead as this also helps in relieving the pain. You can also adjust the child’s sleeping schedule. Cut down on possible trigger foods (this can be trial and error for both of you as not all children are created alike).

At one point in you life, you may have already experienced a headache. So imagine yourself as a child with headache. It is unfortunate that some kids will get to experience that, but there are treatments available that is specific to the level of pain in each child.

Consult a doctor so that he can check for other possible reasons before coming to a migraine-headache diagnosis. This is so he can prescribe the proper medication and treatment for a child that may be in need of some relief.
