Migraines – Symptoms From a Child
Children are usually good-natured little creatures. But when they experience a headache, it's definitely a cause for concern.
When a child who is a migraine sufferer experiences a migraine episode, these are some of the things he or she might experience:
-
Moderate to severe headache intensity.
-
Throbbing or pulsating headache, commonly felt by just one side of the head.
-
Nausea.
-
Vomiting.
-
Extreme sensitivity to light and loud sounds; sometimes even strong smells and odors.
-
The headache gets worse with physical activity, sometimes even with just the slightest movement.
Even though there are several types of migraines and headaches that affect children, most of them have the same triggers. The usual suspects?
-
He or she could have an extreme sensitivity to light and sound. These are sometimes the first indicators of an oncoming attack.
-
Weather changes. Sometimes it’s hot outside, as in really hot. Then you enter an air-conditioned building. For a time, it may feel nice, but soon after, you will slowly feel the headache creeping in. As adults, we’ve had a lot of extreme weather encounters that ended up with us feeling “under the weather”. It's the same thing with children.
-
Food. Yes, unfortunately, certain foods trigger a whole lot of pain. It is best to avoid too salty (processed meats, cheese, chips, junk food, etc.) and too sweet foods (specifically chocolate is defined as the main culprit in creating the ultimate migraine headache). Also, caffeine is a possible suspect. Some nuts may also be triggers. Every child is different, so it is best to have a journal for it, especially if there is a family history of migraines and/or headaches (since this is usually hereditary) to track down those trigger foods and to help your doctor identify if there are any other underlying causes.
-
Changes in sleeping patterns are a factor, especially if the child is used to a set sleeping time.
-
Missing or skipping meals may also contribute to a headache. As an adult, you often get a headache first before you go faint from hunger. After feeling pangs of hunger, you experience extreme head pain. A child is no exception. The simplest solution to this? Be sure that your child is prepared with packed lunches and snacks so that he doesn’t go hungry.
-
Stress. Kids get stressed out too, especially when there are big changes within the family – moving to a new house, leaving friends behind, changing schools, etc. Whatever the change, the child feels it too. So be sure to talk and prepare him for the coming changes to somewhat lessen the impact.
-
Fast approaching puberty is a common cause, especially for girls due to the change in hormones – having their menstrual period and other bodily changes.
The migraine triggers can be managed and may often times be avoided, provided that you know what triggers it in the child. If a child is experiencing a headache for the first time, it is best that you both go to the doctor to make sure that there are no other underlying medical conditions.
After the pediatrician or health care provider gives your child a clean bill of health, then he can now concentrate on preventing and managing migraine attacks.
