Ways to Cure Migraines without Medication
When we feel something bothering us physically or when we are in pain, we usually reach for that bottle of pills to bring ourselves relief. In most cases, we do find ourselves free from pain but it is a known fact that too much medication can have adverse effects on the body.
One of these adverse effects is rebound headache, which occurs when too many drugs are consumed. Although drugs can certainly do their work when used in moderation, migraine sufferers, specifically, must be wary of over-medicating since they would end up having pain, the very reason they were taking the medicines for.
Luckily, there are ways to cure migraines without having to take drugs. These non-medical measures are best used as a complement to the drugs.
Combining different techniques with the medications should be part of the treatment program to cure migraines. When applied appropriately, they have been found to reduce the incidence of attacks and when attacks do occur, they won’t be as severe and debilitating.
Before any preventive measure is implemented, the main goal of a migraine sufferer should be to have a healthy lifestyle. This encompasses how he lives his life, from the physical to the mental and emotional aspects.
This involves having the right diet that includes mostly grains, fruits and vegetable and avoiding fatty, salty and sugary foods. Exercise is also essential and so is living a stress-free life. Keeping the body healthy means that a person is able to ward off diseases and better cope with them if they do occur.
A primary aspect of preventive treatment is being familiar with what events or substances trigger migraine attacks, and avoid these. Identifying triggers could take some time and effort but is very essential for therapy. Some migraineurs keep a food diary to record what foods are consumed to be able to assess the right triggers.
Relaxation techniques have been known to be beneficial to prevent migraine and to provide relief of symptoms during attacks. They can be of various forms such as controlled or deep breathing exercises, visualization of positive images, tensing and relaxing muscles in sequence, physical exercise such as yoga and autogenic training, which is the use of repetitive statements to promote relaxation.
These procedures can be implemented to prevent attacks or even when the patient is experiencing pain and resting. During severe attacks, patients need to lie down in a dark and quiet room until relief comes, which is the best time to apply the relaxation techniques.
There are therapies that fall under the alternative category. Just because they do not fall under conventional medicine does not mean that they are less effective. Some migraine sufferers swear to the benefits that these methods provide to cure migraines. They include acupressure, acupuncture, yoga and herbal remedies. Applying any of these therapies must only be done with the consent of a physician since it might interfere with medications or some other forms of treatment that the patient is undergoing.
Considering how painful the disease can be, it is but natural for sufferers to find the best way to cure migraines. Luckily, there are several treatments available for him to choose from.
